Verity, an award winning author with a large fan base and an abundance of dark truths. After the loss of her daughter Chasitin, the grief overcomes Verity and takes control of her life, or it seems to. A short time after the loss of Chasitin, they lost their other daughter, Harper, as well. The grief pent up to these two sudden losses took control of Verity which led her to intentionally crashing her car that left her in a coma. However, after Verity’s car accident and hiring Lowen, the truth was revealed about Verity and the loss of her children. “Caring for a wife who is no longer his wife. Tied to a home that’s no longer a home. And I can’t imagine this is how Verity would want him to live”(93). Jeremy was spending his time caring for his wife while Lowen was finding out her truths. Verity wrote from the villainous point of view which led to her becoming a famous author. However, she also wrote her own biography from a villainous point of view which Lowen was not aware of at first. Verity’s way of writing led people to believe that she was a villain herself. Lowen often felt as if she was being watched or had an uneasy feeling about Verity, but when the truth was revealed that she was faking a coma to hide the truth, all of Lowen’s suspicions came to light. Faking a coma was a difficult task for Verity and with Lowen in the house it became even more challenging. After the car accident which was framed to make it seem intentional, Verity knew that she had to find a way to free her son from the life she was living. Verity’s main goal was to escape Jeremy and the blame he had on her for the loss of their daughters. “When I turn my body to face her, she’s staring at me. Only this time, I know she isn’t there, hiding behind that vacant stare”(289). Faking a coma had to have been a difficult task, especially with a hired caregiver and an overprotective husband. Verity however was intelligent with her actions and knew when she could go around the house or when she had to stay in character. Not only was Verity an excellent writer, but she also knew how to act. Lowen became extremely suspicious of Verity and eventually made Jeremy aware of her suspicion which led to them discovering that she was indeed faking a coma but only to hide the truth. When Jeremy discovered that she was never truly in a coma, he killed her. After the brutal murder that Lowen played a role in, she discovered a letter that unveiled the truth. The letter went into great detail about how Verity wrote in a villous point of view, not only in her novels but also her manuscript and that the car accident that left her in a so-called coma was caused by Jeremy who made it look as if she had done it intentionally. Verity remained in the house faking a coma for such a long time because she felt the need to take her son with her when she escaped to free him from the anger that Jeremy carried. After discovering the truth of why Verity was faking a coma and that she truly wasn’t a villain, it was difficult to not side with her. Throughout the novel, Jeremy is made out to be a hero, but a fake coma revealed an abundance of truths. Even though it had to have been extremely difficult to maintain character and fake a coma, Verity persevered until death to try and save her son.
